Is Plumbing the Right Trade for Me?

Let’s talk frankly: there aren’t as many young people gravitating toward the trade professions as there used to be. These days that mythical “everyone” is gravitating toward occupations in technology, not in plumbing, carpentry, and electrical.

So what does that mean for the workforce? We don’t suddenly have no need for workers in those trades. If anything, there is a greater need than before. Since there are so many people looking to other professions, if anything there will be additional opportunities for new employees in the trades.

So if you have an interest in the plumbing field, for example, should you pursue a career in that area? In short, absolutely.

Even as technology continues to evolve, plumbing may make small technological changes. In recent years pipes have evolved to plastics from metal, and innovations in the industry mean increased opportunities for work in the coming years.

It is also rather evident that, for example, plumbing jobs will never be outsourced to a foreign country, as jobs in technology and other fields sometimes are. Plumbing is a physical, on-site activity that requires someone to be on site to perform the work.

Plumbers are a trade that everyone needs. Almost everyone has plumbing needs from time to time, whether it’s a clogged pipe, a water main break, or a broken toilet. That means virtually everyone, both business and residential, need people to ensure their pipes remain clear and flowing.

If you see yourself gravitating toward the trades for work, keep in mind that just because it isn’t necessarily fashionable to enter a certain field, that doesn’t mean there are no opportunities. Get yourself into the right field for you, and carve out your own niche, whether it’s in plumbing, carpentry, or any other field.
