Can You Own Your Own Plumbing and Heating Business?
It’s the dream of many a young professional: to own your own business. For a newbie in the plumbing and heating business it might be a primary goal. But how can you turn a job where you have a boss into a business where you control your own destiny?
It’s not easy. Many new businesses fail quickly, some within scant months of opening up. Why? A lack of business acumen, improper preparation, and a lack of planning.
Of course if you want to run a successful plumbing and heating business, you need to be well-versed in plumbing and heating. You need those skills to perform the job. But don’t lose sight of the importance of keeping the business in order.
Having a business means paperwork. It has to be kept up with, whether by the business owner or someone the business owner employs. As the owner, you can’t count on this “just getting done”; it must be diligently kept up with. Let it go too long and you lose control of your cash flow.
That all starts with a sound business plan. That means having reachable goals for your first year, the appropriate manpower to meet those goals, and the tools you need for the job. Also, make sure you have the proper support structure in place. Consulting an attorney and an accountant would be a good start.
And above all, make sure you have the ability to actually perform the tasks you are promising your client base. For most people, it’s advisable to spend a few years in the employ of a seasoned plumbing and heating professional, gaining the appropriate experiences and knowledge to be able to set out on your own.
Remember that starting a business isn’t something you should approach lightly. It’s a time- and money-consuming endeavor that may not pay off in the first couple of years. Be sure you can afford to wait out the lean years in order to establish yourself. But, by all means, if it is your goal, plan right and make it happen!
