Choose Between Residential and Commercial Electrical Careers

Individuals who want to become electricians will make an important decision – will they choose residential or commercial work?

Every electrician needs to learn coding and know how to stay within a budget. But residential and commercial jobs have different responsibilities.

Residential electricians train for projects in home and apartment living spaces. The design of residential systems protects against electrical shocks. These systems are set up to stay out of reach for people living in the house. Electricians wrap a special covering called sheath insulation around all the wiring in homes. Most of the wiring goes through pipes or ceiling rafters, keeping everything safe and secure.

Commercial electricians work in places like offices, factories, stores, and even energy or chemical plants. Their job is to install and maintain electrical systems in these big spaces. Commercial systems have specific requirements in terms of wiring and voltage. They need more power, better efficiency, and equipment that lasts longer.

Choosing a residential or commercial career path depends on individual interests, abilities, and goals. Some electricians decide to focus on one path while others try both at different stages of their careers.

The great news is that Orleans Tech helps students train to become residential and commercial electricians. It also offers the options of daytime or evening classes, as well as part-time and full-time training programs.
