OTC Alumni Stories: She Took This Class. And Then She Renovated a Fixer-Upper.

When you hear “trades school,” you might think of training for jobs in fields like carpentry, electrical, or plumbing.

But some Orleans Technical College (OTC) students, like Shamia, attend to gain skills not only for careers but also to learn how to do their own repairs.

We recently caught up with Shamia to discuss her time at OTC and see how her training has helped her get to where she is today.

What led you to the Building Maintenance Program at Orleans Technical College?

I enrolled in the building maintenance program at Orleans Technical College because I bought a home that needed a lot of work. I was a mom of 3 barely making any money at my previous job, so I knew I couldn’t afford to pay contractors to fix it, so I learned how to fix it myself.

Was the hands-on work environment helpful for you?

Yes, the hands-on work environment was helpful. I learn best by watching and doing it.

Do you feel like you were supported by your instructor and OTC staff?

Yes, everyone there was very helpful and supportive. Ms. Christine went above and beyond to find my dream job.

What was your biggest takeaway from the program?

My biggest take away from the program was what we learned about asbestos. It’s the reason I’m in the field of work I’m in now.

Where are you currently employed? Do you feel like the Building Maintenance program prepared you for your current role?

I currently work at Synertech Environmental, LLC, and the building maintenance program taught me the components of a building that help me in my current role.
