Q&A with Anita Litz, Practical Nursing Program Director
The Practical Nursing (PN) Program offered by Orleans Technical College will prepare you for a rewarding healthcare career. Overseeing the day-to-day operations of the program is program director, Anita Litz. We talked with Anita to learn more about her role and the PN program.
What is your role as the Program Director for Orleans Technical College’s Practical Nursing (PN) program?
My role as director is to oversee the nursing program and its day-to-day operation. This includes ensuring that all curriculum, policies and procedures comply with the state board of nursing and our accreditor standards, coordinating with clinical sites, and overseeing personnel. In addition, I make sure that all the content taught within the classes and the clinical experiences relate directly with the test plan for NCLEX, ensuring our students are well prepared for testing.
Could you give us a brief overview of what the PN program will look like for students?
Our program will be a day program, 52 weeks total in length, and Monday through Friday, with students attending classes onsite at Orleans. Students will also attend Clinicals at various sites in the community withemployer partners. These clinical sites include hospitals, long term care, and clinic settings.
What are the benefits of entering the nursing field?
Nurses at all levels are in high demand, with the need only projected to increase even more over the next 10 years. Healthcare organizations need qualified nurses to fill open positions, not just in Pennsylvania, but nationwide. A nursing license provides a person with a sustainable skill enabling them to provide for themselves and their families.
What makes Orleans’ PN program stand out from others?
Orleans is a non-profit operated by JEVS Human Services, JEVS has a long history of helping people create a path to independence and economic security. This alone makes Orleans different from many other PN programs, meaning it’s not just about the money, it’s about helping the student achieve their educational goals. In addition, we have considered what is best for the student’s educational plan in designing our program and have partnered with leading healthcare providers in the area to give our students valuable clinical experiences not available to other PN programs.
What advice would you give to individuals interested in enrolling in this program?
I would say that they should make sure they are properly informed about what nursing school consists of the time involved and the level of commitment it takes. I would suggest that they come into Orleans, meet the people here, learn more details about the program and tour our facility. We are always happy to answer questions.
