Wanted: Carpenters
When you think about fields that need new workers, you might think about tech jobs, or jobs that most people don’t want to do, like a sanitation worker, or alligator wrestler. But one field that is experiencing a hiring boom is one you might not expect: carpentry.
Why carpentry? Carpenters serve an important function in the construction of new homes, and indeed that is the largest business segment hiring. New home construction and home remodeling also contributes to the high need for new people to work in the field.
In addition, carpenters are also needed to repair and replace public infrastructure like roads and bridges, which will also contribute to the employment increase, and construction of facilities like factories and power plants may also contribute to some jobs.
So what to carpenters do? Typically they work to install and build structures, specifically the framework of a structure, as well as fixtures within those structures. Carpenters play an integral role in the construction of new homes and businesses, including factories and other structures.
There are three main types of carpenters: residential, commercial, and industrial carpenters. Residential carpenters of course work in new home, townhome, and condominium construction; commercial carpenters remodel and help build commercial office buildings, hospitals, hotels, and other commercial structures; industrial carpenter work in civil and industrial settings, working on infrastructure.
Which type of carpenter you want to become is up to you. You may certainly explore the possibility of being more than one type over your career, but most carpenters specialize in one area or another, generally. Finding the area that appeals most to you can help you maximize your effectiveness in the field…assuming you want to contribute to an area of need.
